how far do i want to be able to cast?

I just went to meijer and got myself an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur low profile baitcast reel and Ugly Stik 6 foot medium action casting rod. How far is a good cast with a 1/4 or 1/2 ounce jig (im not exactly sure what i was using)?

Careful, I followed Mikes advice and I cast so far My jig hit the back of my head.

You should be able to cast a couple hundred feet. Having said that, you’re longest cast will come if you do the following: reel up your jig so that it hangs about 3 inches from your rod tip. Next, release your bail and watch your jig. If it drops, tighten/loosen your reel knob (not the drag) so that your jig/lure just begins to fall. You should make this adjustment for every different lure you use. It will prevent backlashes and give you the smoothest and longest possible cast. Good luck.

if you were pitching ( regular casting) about 30 to 45 feet but if you were flip casting about 15 to 20 feet. Also get braided line it helps you cast farther and it doesn’t stretch like monofiliment

Pitching and flipping are for short distance casting, close to cover. If you tune your reel right, depending on the reel quality you should be able to cast quite aways. Between 100-150 feet, all depending on lure weight. KVD, pro bass fisherman, likes to cast his cranks 50 yards or over. Just something to compare to,

Abu Garcia makes quite a few low profile reels, but assuming it’s of the same price range as the Ugly Stik, I’ll assume it’s a Black Max or Silver Max.

A 6′ M rod is not great for jig fishing. I use a 7′ H for casting and pitching jigs and a 7’6" MH or H for flipping.

Pitching and flipping are both short range techniques (and pitching is not regular casting). Flipping being the shorter of the two. Casting, you shouldn’t have a problem, if you’re reel is set properly, casting 50yds, even with the 6′ rod.
